Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

The temperatures are still in the 90’s, and it definitely still feels like summer, but with school back in session (including preschools) and football season starting this weekend, not to mention Labor Day on Monday, I would say it’s definitely the end of the summer.  On the one hand, I’m excited for the cooler weather, so I can take Dominic to the park and on walks in his buggy without dying of the heat within minutes of going outside, break out the slow cooker so I can make chili and other yummy crock pot recipes, and most of all it means we’re super close to having BCM with us!  On the other hand, summer is my favorite season.  I’m going to miss going to the pool, the Sprayground, and all of the other fun summer activities.

What really makes this the end of the summer is the fact that Dominic starts parents’ morning out next week!  On Wednesday we went to the “Meet the Teacher” event at the school, which was basically an “Open House” or Orientation for the school.  Brian met us there and was only 1 of 2 dads there.  We were able to meet his teacher (again), the assistant, and the other kids and their parents in the class.

When Dominic and I first walked into the classroom, he automatically started fussing and wanting me to hold him.  Not a great introduction to the teachers and not a great thing for a first-time mother getting ready to leave her first-born son for the first time.  Thankfully, I spotted a table that had a computer keyboard, calculator, and several old phones on it.  Dominic and I sat there, and he had a ball.  He started feeling more and more comfortable and then began walking around the classroom, playing with the different toys and kids.  By the end of our time there, Dominic didn’t even want to leave!

It’s been an amazing summer full of lots of fun.  We went to Amelia Island (I went twice) and Amicalola Falls but also have had a busy summer full of smaller activities.  At the beginning of the summer, I posted a list of 10 summer activities you can do with a young toddler, and I’m surprised that I actually completed a good portion of the list -  7/10).  See below:

10 Summer Activities for 1 Year Olds:

  1. Pool went to the pool multiple days a week and turned my little boy into a little fish! :)
    Learning to swim this summer!
  2. Puppet Show we went to 1 puppet show and discovered that Dominic liked it, but it required an attention span that was a little more than a 1 year old boy can take.  This definitely makes the list for next summer though!
  3. Dominic and me at his first puppet show.
  4. Roswell Sprayground an activity we did numerous times over the course of the summer and can’t wait to do it again next summer too.  We may even invest in a pass for the summer next year especially with 2 boys!
  5. Getting sprayed at the sprayground!
  6. Monkey Joe’s – we just went back over the weekend (does that still count as summer?), and Dominic had so much fun on the inflatables.  One of his favorite things to do is walk and fall around on our King sized bed, so this was pretty similar.  Being a weekend, it was  bit crowded, so the plan is to go  back on a weekday.  This is a great place for my upcoming "winter activity list" since it's indoors but still active.  Definitely a great place for very active boys!
  7. Sliding down the huge inflatable slide with Daddy!  Dominic loves slides!
  8. Imagine It! Children’s Museum – went once, loved it, and will return.  This will be a great winter activity when it’s cold out too.
  9. The boys on the tractor at the Children's Museum.
  10. Centennial Olympic Park Fountains – did not end up doing this one, but hope to next spring or summer in conjunction with either the Children’s Museum or Georgia Aquarium
  11. Cagle’s Family Farm – another one we didn’t end up going to but it’s in our fall plans for sure!
  12. Peachtree-Dekalb Airport Playground – Yet another activity we didn’t make because it got to be so hot.  This one is being put on our “fall list” as well.
  13. Zoo AtlantaTook Dominic and loved it but this is something that we will do again in the fall and spring.  It’s too hot in the summer for this one!
  14. Will B. and the Mortons at the Zoo
  15. Georgia Aquarium – We loved this activity as well and Dominic adored the fish.  Another good winter activity since it’s indoors especially if you can find a coupon because it’s rather pricy.
  16. Dominic's 1st trip to the Aquarium (looking disinterested here but he really did love it)
We had a great summer and I'm a bit sad that it's over, but I'm excited for the fall!  Pumpkin patches, leaves falling, sweater weather, and most importantly a chance for us to venture outside again in the afternoon!!  Next week is Dominic's 1st day of parents' morning out, and I enter my 3rd trimester!!  Not much time till we meet BCM!  This is such an exciting time for the Morton Family! :)
