What a Difference a Year Makes - Blake's 3rd Year

Blake is 3!

Another year has flown by and Blake almost looks like a different child. How can Blake be 3 years old now? My sweet, round toddler has developed into a wild and crazy, little boy.

Physically

Blake's appearance is the thing that has changed the most. He has grown taller and slimmed down especially in his once round face. At his 2 year checkup, Blake was 31 lbs 11 oz (the 85th percentile in weight) and 37.1 inches tall (over the 95th percentile in height). At his 3 year checkup, Blake has slown down a bit which is normal for his age. He weighed 35 pounds (80th percentile) and was 39.4 inches tall (90th percentile), totally a 4 pound and over 2 inch increase in size in the past year. Blake went from wearing 3T-4T shirts, 2T pants, 4T pajamas, and size 7 shoes to now wearing 4T shirts, 3T pants, 4T-5T pajamas, and size 8-9 shoes.

Face

My favorite feature of Blake's has always been his smile especially the dimple on his left cheek and that hasn't changed for me. That smile is simply infectious and has developed into his get-out-of-free card recently. It manages to get him out of trouble for sure or at least he attempts to use it to do so. It especially works on me. Blake's eyes still "smile" too, making it that harder to be mad at the kid when he gets into mischief (and that is a frequent occurrence for him). Blake has a full set of teeth including his 2 year molars and has a small gap between his front teeth just like I had as a child (pre-braces). I think it gives his smile an extra bit of character. Blake's signature head tilt upward while watching TV, just like his Papa (my dad), continues to provide Brian and me with a good laugh. His face has slimmed down quite a bit making him look older and giving him that "little boy" look. Typically his face has some kind of bruise or scrape on it from a fall because this boy is all boy.

Hair

Blake's full curly head of hair provides me with a continuous battle of deciding whether or not to let it be long, curly, and (a little) crazy or chop off the curls and keep him looking clean-cut, grown-up, and handsome. I never imagined having these issues with my son. :) Every 3 months or so this little Italian has to get a much-needed haircut. The only real difference from a year ago in Blake's hair is that it has just become thicker and thicker. We recently started using conditioner in his hair. Meanwhile, the curls certainly still capture Blake's wild personality.

Sleep

At 2 years old, Blake slept 11-12 hours a night with a 2-3 hour nap during the day. A year later, those numbers are still the same, but shortly after his 2nd birthday, he moved from his nursery into his "big boy" room formerly known as our guest room to make room for his baby sister. Then a month to the day before Alyssa was born Blake started jumping out of his crib. We quickly converted it into a toddler bed (took the side rail off of his crib) to avoid him getting hurt. That sparked a good 5 month long naptime battle. He loved the freedom of getting in and out of his crib and then wanted to play the entire naptime. That led to one tired child in the afternoon. He would have horrible tantrums and/or end up passing out on the couch...even on my chest a couple of times which I didn't mind too much. Many times he would literally end up dropping on the floor, and I would find him passed out next to the toddler bed, door, or window usually with his blanket. We tried everything to help him nap since he clearly still needed a nap. We put a twin bed in his room, so he felt like he had the choice to sleep in his toddler bed or "big boy bed." That didn't work.

We took all of his toys out of his room or out of reach. So what did he do? He tore apart his room because what else does a crazy toddler do when he doesn't want to nap? Blake pulled a framed painting off of his wall, breaking the glass and frame everywhere. He pulled all of the clothes out of drawers and down from the hangers in the closet. He broke the blinds. He repeatedly pulled down the curtains, breaking the curtain rods. He used the drawers in his chest of drawers as stairs and climbed up on his chest of drawers, doing such things as tearing down his white noise machine and best of all the video monitor in what I have to assume was a scheme to conceal his mischief. The worst incident occurred when he did this and pulled down his Winnie the Pooh lamp, breaking it either in the fall or while "playing" with it. I walked into his room to find the lamp and lamp cord strung across the floor with blood all over the carpet and lamp shade. Thankfully, it was just from his finger getting cut on a screw and the light bulb was still intact. On our beach vacation in a rental condo and he performed similar activities which resulted in a broken lamp shade and lamp (2 separate incidents) and dresser drawer. Thankfully, with a trip to the hardware store, Brian was able to replace/repair these pieces.

Thank God for a fun summer spent outside swimming and running around all season long because Blake suddenly started falling asleep in his bed at naptime. These days he naps most of the time and usually for 2.5 to 3 hours. At night, he sleeps from about 8:00 at night till about 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning hardly ever waking up in the middle of the night even when he's sick. When he doesn't get enough sleep, Blake is a pretty miserable kid, so sleep is obviously very important to him. Blake is still the soundest sleeper in the house and I'll be happy if he stays that way!

Eating

Blake's eating habits has become our biggest challenge this year. One thing that hasn't changed over the past 12 months has been the fact that Blake acts like a complete maniac when he's hungry. We call this Blake being "hangry" (hungry-angry). So I have to keep granola bars accessible at all times. He had been what I described as a "big eater" but now his appetite is pretty small and the various foods he eats are pretty limited. He's almost exclusively a vegetarian other than with turkey dogs. Luckily, he still loves peanut butter so he eats a ton of peanut butter sandwiches (no jelly because that's on the "no" list). He also loves yellow American cheese as long as it's not melted (no grilled cheeses or even pizza). Blake continues to eat bananas, grapes, apples, goldfish, pretzels, Cheerios, Rice Chex, fettuccine, crackers - peanut butter crackers especially, graham crackers, and especially cookies, ice cream, candy, and cake. We refer to Blake as the Cookie Monster because he's pretty obsessed. He loves to drink water but also drinks 2% milk - a change from whole milk from a year ago. Blake still likes juice but he only gets that on special occasions. I've also started giving him chocolate Pediasure Sidekicks to help with his nutrition too and we refer to those as "chocolate milk." Blake also get a daily multivitamin and probiotics. Just like a year ago, Blake continues to grow, so I'm hoping he's eating enough.
Dying Easter Eggs - April 2014
"Tricks"

Blake likes to display his many tricks these days. A year ago, Blake was running all over the place and that continues to be the case. He was a runner, always running away from me. Over the course of the year, there was an incident where he escaped our newly fenced i backyard (it was fenced in BECAUSE he's a runner). I found him down the street playing in a neighbor's yard. Thankfully, he has calmed down and is much better about following my directions and not running away. We took him to the Aquarium on his birthday stroller-free, and he stayed with us the entire time - a huge difference from a year ago. Additionally now, Blake likes to (happily) gallop and skip around the house. It's adorable.

Blake continues to love to climb, singing almost any song he hears especially Christmas ones like Rudolph the "Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman." He identifies most of the letters of the alphabet and many of their sounds now, huge progress from only knowing a couple a year ago. Blake counts to 22 (versus counting to 12 last year) and recognizes numbers 0-10. Blake knows all of his colors (green, red, blue, purple, pink, yellow, orange, black, and white) and shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square, crescent, star, and heart). He still loves animals and making animal sounds.

Tee Ball - May 2014
Potty Training

A year ago, Blake wore size 5 diapers and had 2-3 dirty ones a day. He had zero interest in going to the bathroom on the potty, much less sit still for more than a second on the potty. About a month before his birthday, I decided to finally tackle potty training with Blake. He was doing great, running around the house naked and then running to the bathroom. Blake was extremely enthusiastic and excited with his success and wasn't even too into the "treats" he received as rewards. He sat on the little potties for the first half of the first day and after that he decided he wanted to stand (like Dominic of course). This started on the little potty but quickly moved on to the big potty. The funny thing is that because he's just barely too short to stand, Blake randomly decided to climb up on the toilet, kneeling on the seat and peeing that way, so sort of standing. He loves it this way, so  I figured why mess with a mostly good thing?

However, after so much success, poor Blake started throwing up from a virus halfway through the weekend, which served as a potty training speed bump. So I'm hoping to work more on potty training over Christmas Break. At this point, when Blake is wearing just underwear or is naked, he is fully potty trained. However, when he has pants on (like when we leave the house) if he's in underwear, he has a harder time. So for now, he wears Pullups outside of the house. With potty training, Blake has decreased to just having 1-2 dirty Pullups each day, which he saves for when he's wearing Pullups. At night and at naptime, he's still wearing Size 5 diapers/Pullups. When he wears underwear, he wears mostly size 4T.

Jumping into the pool - June 2014

Language

Blake has started communicating quite a bit this year where I can actually understand what he wants and things that have happened. However, he is still having trouble speaking intelligbly so he recently entered speech therapy. On the bright side, we have seen quite a bit of progress over the last 12 months and he is speaking in more and more 3 word sentences ("I want Cheerios.") as opposed to just a word or two (Cheerios). We're also really trying to get him to say please and thank you more. Between his boundary-testing personality and not being able to communicate as well as he would like to, Blake ends up having a lot of tantrums these days. Luckily, his yelling has decreased a lot compared to last year but he still likes to make himself be heard.

Feeding ducks - July 2014
Schedule

Blake's schedule a year ago looked like this:
8:00         - Wake up
8:30         -  Breakfast
12:00       - Lunch
1:30         - Nap
4:00         - Wake up
6:30         - Dinner
8:00         - Bedtime

At 3 years old, his schedule looks pretty similar:
7:30/8:00 - Wake up
8:15         -  Breakfast
11:00       - Snack
1:00         - Lunch
2:30         - Nap
5:30         - Wake up
6:30         - Dinner
8:00         - Bedtime

A year ago, Blake had the same playgroup and weekly school schedule as he has now: on Monday mornings, we typically go to Blake's playgroup, then he goes to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and now he has speech on Fridays. I'm hoping to get him in a sport or extracurricular in the coming months but between Alyssa being born, still napping, and conflicts, I haven't had a good chance to put him in a class.

Park fun - August 2014
Personality

Blake's personality continues to be one of the highlights to my life. He's still hilarious, silly, cuddly, social, curious, extremely strong-willed, and very sweet. A year ago, I described him as easy-going...that has changed! I'm hoping it's just a phase but if he doesn't like something (like wearing a jacket) a tantrum ensues. He's much less compliant than Dominic was at this age and doesn't respond to rewards the same way that Dominic did/does. Blake likes to dig in his heels and do what he wants to do. He still loves other people - adults, kids, and especially older kids.

Blakey copies everything his brother says and does and absolutely loves his brother. He also adores his sister and is typically very gentle with her. Blake has taken on his big brother role and has quickly become the typical 2nd child/middle child being an explorer and adventurous and loving attention and being around other people. Blake is a mama's boy for sure, not that I mind. He loves cuddling and snuggling especially with me.

Blake is all about music - kids songs and real music. He adores animals and will look outside the window in his room for hours instead of napping. Blake is very active, loving to skip around and just being outside climbing, running around, and playing in the dirt. He has named the area under our deck "the cave" and would spend hours down there if he could. We often predict that he'll end up being outdoorsy and a hippy especially with his love of Bob Marley.

Jumping! - September 2014

It's been a busy year for our family and Blake has grown and changed quite a bit over these past 12 months. It always mystifies me how at each birthday my baby has grown up and this year is no different. My baby boy is 3 years old. I'm so thankful to have such a funny, sweet mischief-maker in my life to keep me on my toes and make life interesting and entertaining. Hoping for a great 4th year to come for our not-so-little guy!

Petting Zoo - October 2014

10 Months as a Party of 5!

Our Party of 5

It's been a very long time since my last post but our sweet Alyssa's beautiful, little face brightened our family 10 months ago and things have been pretty chaotic ever since. (FYI - I just posted a bunch of postings that I typed up but never got around to posting, so enjoy those). When our family grew from 2 kids to 3, our family went from (somewhat) organized chaos to an all out circus. Luckily, Brian and I are both grew up in large (3 and 4-kid families), so this is really what we're used to anyway. I think things are going as smoothly as they possibly can and it's a lot of fun. It really is a Party of 5! Unfortunately, dealing with an infant while caring for, entertaining, playing ref for, teaching, policing, and chauffeuring 2 extremely active little boys has left me with little or no time to blog. After all, I have a hard enough time just getting things done around the house between feedings, pumpings, naps, and the boys' activities. A lot has gone on over the last 8 months.

5 people = mountains of laundry

Alyssa is such a sweet, smiling, happy, easy-going, loveable baby girl. She's been truly an amazing baby as she is very easy going and honestly hardly ever cries at all (not even when she's getting hungry!!). She does, however, spend a good deal of time in her car seat and baby carrier being shuffled around as we take the boys to and/or from school, appointments, and other activities. I was the 3rd child so I feel extra guilty about this with her, but she really doesn't seem to mind. She's always looking up at us with a huge grin and seems as happy as can be with her. Alyssa (aka Baby Cakes as Brian and Dominic call her) is growing and changing daily. She started smiling very early on (3 weeks although Brian will say it started at 2 weeks) and is extremely interactive with everyone. She wants to be held and around people all of the time, which is both fun and challenging when I'm juggling 2 active little boys as well.
Alyssa at almost 6 months old. This is the face she makes most of the day.

These days Alyssa is moving around all over the place. However, she wasn't "technically" crawling until she was about 8 1/2 months old and instead moved like a seal throughout our downstairs level. One morning she woke up, it just "clicked," and she finally began coordinating her arms and her legs with each other. Now she moves much faster and obviously loves it. It's interesting because the boys both crawled on the early side (around 6 1/2 and 7 months) , and I've always heard that the 3rd child does everything earlier, but I'm thinking that it has more to do with girls not being as active as boys. I've enjoyed not having to chase a 3rd child around as soon. Alyssa started pulling up on the boys' train table (how appropriate) just before she started crawling and quickly began cruising on and between furniture. Around Thanksgiving she started climbing stairs too. As a result, she's now on the middle level of her crib. It's hard to believe that she'll be walking before I know it!

Alyssa has her two bottom teeth (getting her first at around 6 1/2 months and the other within a week of the first) and is wearing 9 to 12 month clothes. She's in size 3 diapers. At her 6 month checkup, she measured at 27 inches tall (80th percentile) and weighed in at 17 lbs 4.4oz (65th percentile). Alyssa began eating solids at 5 1/2 months just like her brothers did. She is a great eater, not picky at all (yet) unlike her brothers. She started finger foods at around 8 months old. She has continues to drink 4 8-oz bottles of breastmilk a day along with her 3 solid meals a day. I'm feeding Alyssa and the boys all day long. After drinking her bottle, she follows it with 4 oz of pureed/baby food and then a bottle at bedtime.

Here is her current schedule:
9:00 - wake up
9:15 - breastmilk
9:30 - breakfast solids
11:30 - nap
1:15 - breastmilk bottle
1:30 - lunch solids
2:30 - nap
5:45 - breastmilk bottle
6:30 - dinner solids
7:45 - bedtime bottle
8:00 - bedtime

Just like her brothers, Alyssa has been a great sleeper. She slept in our room in a bassinet for over a month before moving to her crib in her nursery. She plateuaed for a while at around 5 hours between feedings at night. I think I enabled it because I would hear her wake up and go feed her before she started crying because I worried that she would wake up the boys. It's crazy but we never even were close to "crying it out" with Alyssa because she never cried in the middle of the night. We would do a pre-emptive feeding around 1:00 before we went to bed, so would only have to wake up once and Brian was sweet enough to help. Around 8 or 9 weeks she was sleeping 9 hours straight and then after getting sick and therefore she started sleeping 13 hours at 14 weeks. She's been amazing ever since. She's also been a good napper. Being the 3rd child and on the go, her morning nap has always been in the car seat or in the Bjorne/Ergo and only about 20 minutes (around 45 min in the crib). Her afternoon naps are 2-3 hours in the crib...at the same time as the boys! Over the summer, after exhausting them at the pool all morning, I had all 3 kids napping at the same time for 2 hours a day, sometimes 3! Once school started, the boys wouldn't always actually sleep, but for 2 months in the summer, it was pretty amazing.

Separation anxiety has begun for Alyssa in the last month as she cries when I walk away now and cries when I leave her in her crib at bedtime. Thankfully, it lasts only until I've closed the door. Alyssa is quite the Daddy's girl already. She truly gets the biggest smile on her face whenever she sees him. It's precious. :) Her other favorite person is Dominic and I know Dominic feels the same way about her. She loves Blake too, and he loves her, but Dominic loves playing and interacting with his baby sister and most of all making her laugh. Speaking of her brothers, the boys are doing great with their baby sister and adjusting wonderfully to life with a 3rd child in the mix.

The week after school ended for summer break, Dominic started reading!!! He has been sight reading since he was two years old, but he was finally able to put together the letter sounds that he sounded out. After a fun summer spent mostly at the pool, Dominic and Blake started at a new preschool in September, and it's the greatest school! Dominic LOVES school this year, begs to go back every day, and will even cry on non-school days. We are seeing a completely different attitude from him, which is wonderful. He's in the Young 4s class (although he's the oldest) and goes 4 days a week (from 9am to 1pm giving me a much-needed extra hour of productiveness compared to last year).

Dominic with his self-portrait

On his "day off" he has occupational therapy (OT), which is a HUGE help with his sensory and fine motor issues. Dominic could barely write and all of a sudden is drawing people and asking to draw (he wouldn't even do this for candy last year!). Dominic tells me about his day, his "friends" from his class, and sings me songs he learns in school all of the time. He also participates in an after school gym class activity and loves it, and Brian or I try to walk to school with Dominic - just over a mile each way - once or twice a week to help meet his sensory/physical activity needs. I'm hoping to add Blake to the walks on his days of school soon too. Swimming is still Dominic's favorite activity. He did Junior Swim Team over the summer (practices but no swim meets) and loved jumping off of the diving boards. I continue to take the boys regularly (as regularly as possible, at least).

Jumping off the 3 meter. Over and over and over and over.

At 4 and a half year old, Dominic still has daily "rest time" where he either naps, rests, reads, or plays in his room quietly for about an hour and a half to 2 hours while Blake and Alyssa nap and I get things done/take a break. He still naps a couple a couple of days a week but usually needs the time to just decompress and reset. On days when he actually naps, he takes a long time to fall asleep at night, so I honestly prefer that he not nap.

Between OT, his new school, new household procedures (such as sticker charts and the rule of no more than an hour of TV a day for both boys), making physical activity be the priority for the boys every single day, and just typical maturing and development, Dominic has made huge leaps from last school year. We still struggle with him being more physical with other kids (more so with the less activity he has) and other social skills, but he has made major progress with these things. He enjoys being my helper at home especially with Alyssa and keeps becoming more and more independent, really wanting to do everything himself these days. He's also still as silly and funny as ever. I hope and pray this this progress continues!

Blake has become a little boy right before my eyes! He happens to be the cuddlest little boy I know, but he's also the most mischievous one. Blake enjoys exploring, climbing, and getting a reaction out of me, so those things together often lead him into trouble. Towards the end of my pregnancy, he began acting out a bit for attention but seems to be doing better. He loves hugs and kisses and is extremely friendly and outgoing most of the time.

These days Blake is about to turn 3 but looks like a 4 year old although he is looking less and less like a toddler and more and more like a "big boy" the slimmer he becomes. Blake naps most days although he has gone through periods where he refuses to nap, which is oh, so much fun for me. These days he's napping 2-3 hours in the afternoon and sleeping 12 hours at night  in the bottom bunk (a full) of his bunk bed. We hope that he gets a roommate (Dominic) soon! Blake is the pickiest eater ever and is also the most stubborn child ever, so these create major stress and struggles for me. He's in the process of being potty trained (he unfortunately caught a stomach bug while he was in the middle of potty training, setting us back quite a bit). Blake goes to school 2 days a week also from 9:00 to 1:00 in the afternoon. Blake  is counting almost to 20, can identify most of the alphabet and numbers 1- 10, and knows all of the basic colors and shapes. He stays home with just Alyssa and me Mondays (when he has his playgroup) and Fridays and along with Dominic on Wednesday mornings. I love getting to spend what little one-on-one time I can with Blake. As a middle child myself, I am extremely cognizant that the middle child is the one who ends up receiving the shaft so much of the time. Plus it's always interesting to see how different Blake is when he's not around Dominic (and vice versa but to less of an extent).

Over the summer, Blake literally took off with his swimming. The first week, he wouldn't leave my hip but he had to keep up with his brother and started jumping off of the diving board and swimming to the side (all completely on his own - no water wings, etc.). By the end of the summer at just 2 and a half years old, he was swimming across the width of the pool! This made for a much more relaxing summer for me. :) Blake is also very into counting, building with blocks, Little People toys, balls, anything vehicle related especially trains. Playing outside is Blake's favorite activity. This can include running around like a crazy person (usually chasing after his big brother), playing in the dirt, hanging out in the playhouse, or mostly playing in his "cave" aka under our deck. Shortly after Alyssa was born, we fenced in the backyard to contain Blake aka the escape artist and now he can sit outside for hours. He loves it!

When I first had Alyssa Blake hardly acknowledged her - something that I considered almost a good thing in a lot of ways because I didn't have to worry about him attacking, smothering, or even touching her, but after about 5 months, he slowly started giving his baby sister more and more attention. Now he absolutely adores her. Sometimes this will include riding his sister but for the most part it just includes kisses. :)

Meanwhile, Blake and Dominic continue to be best friends and each other's favorite playmates, but I would say the last few months and especially the last several weeks, the two have been fighting a bit more...luckily with a lot of laughing in between. Dominic finally started going through a selfish phase and now they fight over toy after toy. Plus they have developed typical sibling roles where Dominic is the older brother and instigator always pushing Blake's buttons trying to annoy him, while Blake is the younger sibling and dramatic victim always screaming and crying over the littlest thing that Dominic does to him. Luckily, they entertain each other and have so much fun with each other more often than fighting, so that outweighs the fighting (mostly). The other day I looked at our three kids laughing and playing together and commented to Brian how lucky we are to have children who honestly love each other so much. They may drive each other crazy - as well as drive Brian and me crazy sometimes too - but I know they are each other's best friends, for which I can't be more thankful.

Our 3 little monkeys :)

Sweet Alyssa!! (February 2014)

Post-posted from February 2014

She's here!! Alyssa Ann Morton was born on February 18th, 2014 at 5:47pm. She weighed 8 lbs and was 20 inches long and is absolutely beautiful. We are already completely in love! Yes, I'm officially mother of 3 kids! That baffles me a little, but I of course feel absolutely happy and blessed to have 3 such sweet (most of the time) children. Now how I'm going to juggle all of their needs, personalities, and hands when I only have 2 hands of my own is still a mystery, but I'm going to try.

My labor with Alyssa was only about 8 hours (compared to 12 hours with Dominic and 14 hours with Blake), but it actually seemed a lot longer. The week before my doctor and I decided (at my appointment right before Atlanta Snow Storm #2) that I would be induced. This was primarily due to the fact that Blake was so big at a week early (over 8 1/2 pounds after they predicted 7 1/2 pounds if he went 40 weeks), meaning if I had waited till 40 weeks, he would have been a 9 lb baby. I had a lot of trouble delivering him because of his size as he was. I had an ultrasound done at 36 weeks with Alyssa and they had predicted she would be about 8 lbs at 40 weeks after measuring her at around 6 lbs 5 oz at that time (give or take a pound either way making it a big range).

Anyway, so with the induction - my 3rd - I was able to plan things pretty well for the boys. Since I'm a big planner, this was a big relief for me. My mom stayed with the boys at our house the Monday night that I went in for the induction and then stayed with them the night after I had Alyssa. After waiting all afternoon for a call from the hospital about what time I should go in, they finally called me at 7:00 to tell me to come in at 9:00. Once Brian and I arrived, I had to wait in the waiting room another 2 hours before my room was finally ready. They gave me cervadil after midnight and I hoped that would be all I would need to go into labor, but no such luck. At 8:00 the next morning, they gave me pitocin which almost immediately sent me into labor (finally). After that my cervix dilated very quickly and they expected that I would deliver around 1:00. However, I was at 9 cm for several hours and in fact never fully dilated. Finally, we tried having me push regardless of that last cm, and it worked. 2 pushes later - an extremely quick and easy experience - Alyssa was born and was hungry as could be!

Alyssa is a name that I've always loved since I was a little girl. Many years ago before Brian and I had kids and we were discussing the future, we decided that Alyssa would be our daughter's name because Brian loved it too when I told him I liked it (he vetoed at least one of my other girl names). Ann was my middle name as it was my mom's and named for St. Ann (the Virgin Mary's mother) since as Catholics we want to be named for a saint. Just like Dominic's middle name, Conway, is Brian's middle name and his dad's as well, we liked the idea of our first born son/daughter having those middle names to honor our families especially since we both felt strongly that we didn't want to have our kids' first names named after us or other family members in order to allow our children to become their own people. Blake's middle name, Christopher, is after my brother Chris as well as Brian's sister Christina, so that worked out well too. It would be nice if Dominic and Alyssa would both continue this tradition with their children too.

Unfortunately such a beautiful, wonderful day was followed by a sad day in my family as my our dog passed away the next morning after a rough last couple of weeks. Lacey, a Golden Retriever, was 15 years old, so she had a very long life. I don't know if the timing was horrible and good because Alyssa's birth helped brighten such a devastating time in my family. It was difficult because my mom was staying with the boys when it happened.

Blake was interested in climbing up to see Baby Alyssa...or just climbing.

Melts my heart! Dominic is already so in love with his baby sister.
Party of 5 or Circus of 5

All 3 kids!

The morning after Alyssa was born, as all of that went on, my mom and dad brought Dominic and Blake to the hospital to meet their little sister and visit us. I missed my little boys terribly, so I was excited to see them both. Dominic walked in, looked around curiously, and then went straight to Brian, while Blake went straight to me. Blake didn't show much interest in Alyssa although he did try to climb up on her bassinet to see the "bee" (baby). Dominic, on the hand, was immediately in love. He happily held her and was incredibly gentle and sweet, something that was beautiful to see especially considering how rough and tumble he normally is. The boys' reactions to their baby sister were very positive or at least not negative, which was a big relief to me.
Getting ready to take our baby girl home!

Warm and cozy and ready for her first car ride. Destination: HOME!

Waiting on our chauffeur (Brian) to pick us up.

With both Alyssa and me being healthy, Brian and I took our baby girl home from the hospital after the minimum 24 hours following her birth (and close to 48 hours for me since I went in the night before for the induction). We were greeted by 2 very excited little boys, my parents as well as my sister and her boyfriend Wes who brought dinner.

Alyssa and the boys

Brian thankfully took the next 2 weeks off for paternity leave while I recovered and we got a handle on juggling 3 kids. I've been told many, many times that when you have 3 kids, you immediately go from a man to man to a zone defense, and I feel that this is very true. The boys thankfully entertained each other quite a bit, which seemed to be a huge help. Also, I was already used to juggling multiple kids, so this made the transition a little easier I think. As the hormones and sleep deprivation started affecting me and I began to feel more and more overwhelmed and emotional, I remembered how this was exactly how I felt after the last 2 births especially the last one, which I think helped me realize that I just needed to push through it over the next couple of days and that seemed to help.

The hardest part this time around has been the sleep deprivation. It was also a little rough for a few days as Alyssa was eating every 2 hours. Blake had definitely spoiled us as he came out basically on a schedule, only eating every 3 hours from day 1. He also "slept through the night" (midnight to 5am) at only 2 weeks old. Alyssa was still trying to work back up to her birth weight, so she was eating constantly...for a couple of days it was every 45 minutes to 2 hours between feedings. This made it impossible to get anything done around the house, let alone take a nap. I will say that the new baby sleep deprivation is nothing compared to that which I experienced before Alyssa was born. Those last 3 months of pregnancy were full of sleepless, uncomfortable, restless nights full of lots of tossing, turning, frequent trips to the bathroom throughout the night (every 1 - 2 hours), and insomnia despite being exhausted. Thank God, I can now sleep comfortably - albiet for only a few hours at a time - instead of feeling half asleep most of the night. Best of all, I have Alyssa sleeping just feet away from me (in the bassinet), making the sleepless nights and exhaustion completely and totally worth it.

Although life is far from perfect, I do have a household full of family, laughter, chaos, and lots of love.  There's nothing better than that!

Happy Birthday, Alyssa!

A Merry Morton Christmas - Christmas 2013 (from January 2014)

Post-posted from January 2014-

A Merry Christmas for the Mortons!

My favorite time of year once again came and went. Christmas "Break" was far from a break for me and in fact was the most exhausting one I can remember. I'm not sure if it was because I'm pregnant, the numerous family events (2 Christmas celebrations + 2 Italian nights + New Year's over the course of 1 week), the fact that Brian had to work every day but Christmas Day and New Year's Day (no Eves off), or a combination of all of these things. The fact that the weather was very cold and/or rainy for most of the break meant that the boys didn't receive their much-needed required physical activity, so their behavior certainly suffered especially at the family events. Having both of our families so close is such a blessing but it also keeps us busy...and can tire is out especially around the holidays.
Happy boys sitting on Santa's lap!

I will say that the time leading up to Christmas was even more fun than ever because the boys were both so into the holiday this year! They loved going to see Santa. Yes, that's right! A Christmas Miracle occurred and both boys not only were tear-free this year meeting Santa but they were also smiling and actually excited to see him! Our tradition continued of taking the boys to the "Real Santa" aka Santa at Phipps. This is where I grew up going and is the quintessential Atlanta Santa. This was Dominic's 4th year and Blake's 2nd year going. Every year at some point someone cries or almost cries, but not this year! The boys were all smiles! i am still in shock. I think it had to do to with the fact that I "prepped" the boys the 2 weeks before our visit by starting Santa movies early. Dominic already knew who Santa was, and Blake quickly learned after a couple of fun Christmas videos. As a result, the boys were happy and at ease. In fact they didn't want to leave Santa when their time was up. I'm sure with 3 of them next year that each of them will cry just to make up for this year's success but until then I'm just thrilled to have happy faces in their Santa picture this year.

Riding on the Pink Pig
Dominic's 4th time on the Pink Pig and definitely his favorite time

Blake enjoying his ride on the "train!"
After going to see Santa we continued our tradition of heading over to Lenox to ride on the Pink Pig, another activity that the boys were much more into this year. The boys loved the "Pig Train" and got to ride it twice which was fun! My parents and sister and her boyfriend all came along too, adding to the fun. It's a always a nice way to kick off the Christmas Season for our family each year and since both boys were so into this time, it was even more fun!

From that point, Dominic couldn't wait for Blake's birthday this year because he had been begging us - very persistently - to put up our Christmas tree so we could get the boys' Polar Express Train out and set it up around the tree. I kept telling him we had to wait until after Blake's birthday (November 30th), so of course the constant begging went from inquiries about Christmas to when we could Blake's birthday party. This year we decided to have a real tree again for the second year. I grew up with a fake tree while Brian always had a real one, so last year was a momentous one when I finally gave in and we got a real one. I have to admit as illogical, financially stupid, and all that a real tree is, they are so much prettier and more fun than a fake one. We were excited after such a long wait and a lot of begging from Dominic when the day after Blake's birthday came, and we finally took the boys Christmas tree shopping. It was fun, but the boys were clearly more interested in running around the trees than actually choosing one for our home. Whatever makes them happy though.

Obviously, tree farms = huge smiles

Oh, Christmas tree!

Adding to the list of "Things I said I Never Would do Before I was a Parent that I Now Do" this year was the Elf on the Shelf. For those who haven't heard about this crazy phenomenon among children (and parents), there are these little elves that visit your family at the beginning of the Christmas season and report to Santa each night on your children's behavior during the day as well as getting into antics around your house that can be extremely entertaining for children. When I was a teacher, I vowed never to participate in this craziness as I didn't understand why parents would intentionally mess up their home doing such things as TPing their own living room. I still agree with this sentiment, so our elf's antics never were too intricate or messy. Our elf came along just after we visited Santa and Dominic named him "Elvis." Dominic wasn't too into him at first but soon was very excited to see what Elvis did each morning. Blake loved him too. There were nights when Elvis didn't do anything (a.k.a. Mom completely forgot) but luckily the boys never seemed to notice. :) Other than going on a bit long and therefore running out of ideas, I would say the whole elf experience was a lot of fun for all of us, so I think Elvis will make his return next Christmas.

Elvis and his antics on the Polar Express

The boys proceeded to spend the month of December very excited about Christmas, listening to and singing Christmas songs repeatedly. Their favorites were "Jingle Bells," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas," "Feliz Navidad," "Run, Run Rudolph," "Jingle Bell Rock," and the newly discovered "Dominic the Donkey." Dominic loved that "Dominic the Donkey" shared his name while Blake loved that it was about a donkey. The boys knew most of the words to these songs and would break into song randomly throughout the day and then demand to listen to these songs each and every time we got into the car. It was adorable but by the time Christmas was over, I was ready to listen to regular music again.

Also, the boys were VERY into Christmas movies. A surprising favorite was an old "Rudolph the Reindeer" on Netflix Streaming that also included a bunch of other very old Christmas shorts. This was referred to by Dominic as "Old School Rudolph" (as opposed to the regular Rudolph which they also enjoyed). "The Polar Express" was also watched over and over again. Both boys love the train and luckily no one was scared of it this year despite the fact that last Christmas Dominic was terrified of the hobo (or "hoho" as he calls him now). Another popular one was my personal favorite, "Home Alone." Dominic loves repeating lines and actions from the movie. Hopefully, he hasn't gotten any ideas from that one!

To add to the Christmas fun was some fun Christmas Season activities - the tree lighting in Dunwoody, driving around looking at Christmas lights in the area, and the Christmas lights display at Lake Lanier. I've always been a huge fan of Christmas lights. It's truly one of my favorite parts of the Season. When Brian and I were dating we would go to various lights display and that led to him proposing to me at the Christmas Village at Lake Lanier's Christmas lights display on Christmas Eve Eve. Since having children we have continued this tradition; however, the last few years we went to other displays such as the Botanical Gardens. This year we returned to Lake Lanier for the first time in 7 years (almost to do the day) since he proposed. Dominic and Blake loved the lights and it was crazy how much they changed the Christmas Village. In fact, the way that they redesigned it has made the spot where Brian proposed just part of the parking lot (bummer). This year they had fake snow, which Dominic was obsessed with, and roasted marshmallows, which Blake was obsessed with - something for everyone! My sister Stephanie and her boyfriend came along too, so it was a lot of fun although very cold!

7 years later and back to where it all started...where Brian popped the question!

Snow!

For the actual holiday, after Brian got home from work on Christmas Eve, we went to the children's mass at our church before going to Brian's parents' house for Christmas Eve dinner. In recent years, Brian and I have enjoyed going to a quiet, non-crowded mass on Christmas morning, but last year we decided that it cut short our Christmas morning fun and decided then that this year we would fight the crowds on Christmas Eve. That worked well at providing us with a low-key Christmas morning at home before going to my parents' house for Christmas Dinner.

Christmas Morning!

Of course that wasn't the end of our extended family get-togethers celebrating the holidays. Two days after Christmas we had an Italian Night at Brian's parents' house and the night after that we had an Italian Night at my brother and sister-in-law's house. Kind of like fact that we have so much family so close to us being both a blessing and a curse (mainly a blessing though!), I now believe that having both families be Italians to be the same on both counts especially where eating so much food is concerned when you have little room to consume anything during your pregnancy. We went on to also attend a New Year's Day dinner at my parents' house on New Year's Day. Not only was this tiring for me as a pregnant person but the boys definitely had a hard time with it as well (as their behavior clearly exhibited).

On the other hand, we LOVED getting to see all of our family and had a lot of fun. We just needed a break from our break. :) Overall, I would definitely say this was a wonderful Christmas holiday. Ever since Dominic's first Christmas, every single year I think about how much more fun Christmas is once you have kids. I would even say it's more fun than when we were kids because you know to enjoy it and you get to see the incredible looks on your kids' faces on Christmas morning and those days leading up to it. It's pretty funny to think that next year we will have a 5th member of our family celebrating with us and she will be have been with us for close to a year at that point. Needless to say, I'm already very excited for next Christmas and all of the fun that we will have!!
